Starting Piano Lessons

Lessons are tailored to the individual requirements and aims of each student. Whether you are learning an instrument for the fisrt time, branching out to play a second instrument, or returning to playing the piano later in life, the lessons will be fun, informative, and constructive. There can be a great sense of achievement when you master a particular piece or technical challenge. Lessons will normally consist of a short warm up with scales / exercises / studies work on current repertoire (focussing on particular areas of musicality, technique, rhythm as required) sight reading, theory, musical games for younger children recap of key points from the lesson and ensuring the student has a clear understanding of what is to be practised over the course of the following week.

All ages and styles of music

I teach students of all ages from those at pimrary school age, right up to adults taking up an instrument in their retirement. The piano is a very accessible instrument right from the start, you will play with both hands together which also provides great benefits for developing co-ordination. It is imporant to learn music that you want to play in order to get maximum enjoyment and continued motivation in your lessons. (so many adults can recall being sent to piano lessons as a child and being forced to play music which they didn’t really enjoy or connect with - resulting in them giving up, but now wishing they had stuck at it) I am a great believer in student-led input to the choice of repertoire, and being exposed to a wide variety of styles of music. Exams can be a great way to provide motivation, and a continual development path as you learn the piano. Apart from bringing pieces up to a high standard of performance, they also include technical elements such as scales, sight reading, and aural tests. For those that wish to sit ABRSM exams, I am very happy to focus lessons towards this but equally it is absolutely your choice whether to follow an exam route or not.  For younger students looking to study at university, music exams can earn UCAS points towards your application.
